PCT Bear Canister, Bear Box and Bear Hanging Regulations and Bear Box Locations in the Sierras …..”Warner Springs Monty” Tam
I VIEW DISCOURAGING THE USE OF A BEAR CANISTER AS UNETHICAL This is an attempt to gather legal data that has not, to my knowledge, been so presented and NOT an attempt to discourage the use of bear canisters. According to what we have collected on the PCT-L, hard written and printed data only (see sources below) Sierra/PCT food storage requirements are as follows:
There are regulations requiring a legal and responsible form of food storage in all area on the PCT through the Sierras through the Golden Trout Wilderness all the way through Tuolumne Meadows to the Northern end of Yosemite National Park. A map (thanks to Rob Mason of the US Forest Service for creating this 3/22/07) illustrating the official US Forest Service data on regulated areas is posted on http://www.sierrawildbear.gov . Here is the direct link to the USDA and USFS Food Storage Requirements in PDF (2008).
